The Sociopath Next Door, a book by Martha Stout

An American in twenty-five is a sociopath, "writes psychologist Martha Stout. And these are not all sinister Hannibal Lecter as individuals, the main character in Silence of the Lambs ! In fact, they may be teachers who publicly ridicule their students, parents who take pleasure in punishing their children or doctors who treat everyone with condescension. Their

in common? They are attracted by power, not an ounce of conscience and
never experience guilt or shame. These seasoned manipulators lie also vying to get their way and do not hesitate to portray themselves as victims in order to arouse pity and obtain favors. They are often charismatic and have an intense personality, which makes them attractive .... Finally, they would be more prevalent in societies that value more competition than cooperation as the United States.

The psychologist has studied these lawless people to understand what kind of person was behind the trauma patients who use its services.

In his book, Martha Stout does not really explain the causes of sociopathy, or how to treat it. By cons, it offers a couple of tips to avoid individuals who suffer: listen to his instinct to resist flattery, not act only out of pity, question authority ... and avoid any person who has lied more than three occasions.
